This is a part-time, remote position based out of our New York City office location. It is expected that all duties will be performed remotely, with the understanding that government and public health guidelines will determine the extent to which it is safe to carry out in-person and onsite activities.
The Program
SEO Scholars is a non-profit focused on improving educational outcomes for students who come from underserved and historically underrepresented backgrounds. Our free eight-year academic program gets low-income public high school students to and through college–with a 100% college admissions rate and 90% college graduation rate. Position Overview
Part-Time Curriculum Writers will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. Part-Time Curriculum Writers are responsible for writing and revising curriculum under the direction of the ELA and Advisory team. ELA Curriculum Writers will design student-facing and instructor-facing curriculum materials for high school ELA courses that can be delivered in an in-person or virtual setting. Role includes planning and leading an instructor orientation session on the unit designed.
Specific writing assignments will be determined based on program needs and applicant fit. Hours per week will also vary depending on scope of the writing assignment. This is a part time, remote position that is anticipated to run from mid-October 2022 through early December 2022.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum Writing: Complete curriculum writing project thoroughly and on schedule.
Curriculum Revision: Revise curriculum components based on feedback from the manager.
Collaboration with SEO Staff: Check in with manager on an ongoing basis to discuss project status (i.e. deviation from estimated completion schedule and/or estimated project hours). Attend check-in meetings to discuss curriculum and status of work, proactively communicate any changes or challenges (i.e. deviation from estimated completion schedule and/or project hours).
Record Keeping: Keep a record of time worked and summary of work completed on a document shared with manager; fill out timecards in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field, preferably English and/or education
Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills
A strong understanding of and philosophical alignment with student-centered, inquiry-based, differentiated instructional practice
Working knowledge of theories and pedagogical approaches such as culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, culturally responsive pedagogy, etc.
Familiarity with the Grades 9 , 10, and 11 Common Core State Standards for ELA
Experience writing and teaching English Language Arts high school curricula
Able to process and act upon complex logistical information with agility and flexibility.
Detail-oriented, empathetic, curious, thoughtful, reflective, proactive and collaborative.
Experience with and desire to work collaboratively with a team navigating multiple priorities.
Preferred: ELA teaching experience with SEO 9th, 10th, or 11th graders; experience designing ELA curriculum for remote/hybrid teaching and learning; experience designing CCLS-aligned assessments
Compensation and Logistics
Compensation for this position is $58 per hour. Hours per week will vary depending on scope of the writing assignment. This is a part time, remote position.
