What You Bring

We are looking for experienced teachers who hold Clear Multiple Subject credentials, who have diverse backgrounds and experiences, are inspired by the vision of and are ready to dive in and roll up their sleeves. Pathway Coaches play a critical role in shaping and crafting the success of the program. You’ll be right at home here if you learn from failure, are willing to work through adversity, like to cultivate strong relationships, and push yourself, your work, and the Pathway Administrators, Coaches, and Teachers to the next level. We expect our Multiple Subjects Pathway to Teaching Coaches to:

Have classroom experience. You have at least five years of successful teaching experience (preferably in a high-need school) and a proven track record of raising student achievement. You have strong familiarity with and expertise in the Common Core State Standards and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (highly preferred).

Know great teaching when they see it. Whether you are watching a teacher deliver a lesson or looking at student performance data, you can identify where that teacher is effective and what s/he needs to do to improve immediately and in the long term. You have previous experience and comfort observing and providing direct feedback to teachers, both written and verbal (highly preferred).

Develop teachers. You track and analyze teacher data, but it’s what you do with it that really has an impact. Based on your data analysis and what you see in the classroom, you identify new approaches to improve teacher performance under a quick timeline.

Build trusting relationships. You have a demonstrated ability to connect with adult learners quickly and to build strong working and coaching relationships that enable transformative change.

Be comfortable with the unknown. Ambiguity doesn’t scare you; just the opposite:, you thrive on it. You are flexible and comfortable adapting your work to maximize your impact on students, the teachers you coach and your team.

Be a continuous learner. You have a demonstrated ability to respond positively to feedback and learn quickly. You will also work collaboratively with your Pathway team to support the success of the Pathway to Teaching program.

What You’ll Do

As a temporary Multiple Subject Pathway to Teaching Coach for the Fall semester 2022, you will support the development of a group of new teachers pursuing a Multiple Subject credential. Specifically, you will:

Develop teachers through direct coaching and training, ensuring that teachers rapidly improve their performance

Conduct cycles of coaching, which include planning for effective instruction, cycles of observation and feedback, and analyzing student learning

Identify innovative solutions for improving the overall performance of your caseload of teachers to meet teacher performance and program completion goals.

Design and facilitate professional development sessions to either full group or to your cohort of Multiple Subjects teachers during responsive coaching sessions or Professional Learning Saturdays.

Grade online coursework for your caseload of teachers and integrate learning into coaching cycles.

Use data to identify and act on trends in Pathway Teacher performance and potential interventions/strategies for improving individual, caseload, and cohort-wide performance.

Establish and reinforce a culture of achievement that drives Pathway Teachers to ensure that all students achieve at high levels through all interactions.

Support teachers through program completion, including facilitating completion of testing, state required teacher performance assessment (edTPA), and coursework requirements.

Liaise with Administrators, site and other Coaches, Content Area Teams, and other SFUSD educators that will position each of your teachers for success in the classroom.

Attend regular collaboration meetings to improve your practice

Position Overview

is SFUSD’s internal teacher preparation program that prepares candidates for a successful career as a teacher in San Francisco Unified School District. We aim to recruit, select, prepare, support, and retain excellent teachers for SFUSD schools. Pathway teachers participate in a rigorous preparation program and are supported by Pathway to Teaching Coaches to develop as educators as they teach in a San Francisco classroom. Through Pathway, aspiring teachers access an affordable, one-year credential program while earning a salary and filling critical teacher vacancies as District intern teachers.

Minimum Qualifications

Deep knowledge of content and instruction, with at least five years K-8 Multiple Subject teaching experience (required), preferably in high-need schools or with high-need populations, and a proven track record of raising student achievement

Clear Multiple Subject credential (required)

Previous experience with mentoring, coaching and/or facilitating professional development for teachers (highly preferred)

Strong familiarity and experience with the Common Core State Standards (required)

Immediate understanding of what effective teaching looks like and a deep commitment to the support of effective and rigorous instruction

Proven ability to overcome barriers and provide seamless support to teachers as they work to complete a rigorous training program

Ability to track and analyze data on teacher and student performance to uncover trends and act strategically and effectively to improve results

Ability to communicate direct feedback in a compelling way that inspires teachers to make immediate improvements to instruction that will accelerate their students’ achievement

Willingness to work occasional Saturdays, to flex hours when needed, and to travel to sites across the city each day.

Active participation and collaboration in team and department meetings.
