Essential Functions
Peer Mentor Recruitment and Hiring
Develop and implement a comprehensive recruitment strategy to ensure a consistent pool of qualified applicants who are committed to the BYU mission and core values of the Office of First-Year Experience.
Plan, initiate and coordinate 2-3 mentor hiring cycles throughout the year
Prepare recruitment materials and coordinate posting with student employment
Coordinate the application process with staff (communication with applicants, interviews, notification, etc.)
Ensure compliance with university hiring regulations and policies
Coordinate the initial orientation of new employees with office staff
Peer Mentor Training and Supervision
Participate in all mentor training meetings
Provide instruction on mentoring and student development topics during annual training
Train and supervise student coordinators in their work with students
Meet individually with peer mentors for biweekly accountability interviews
Coordinate and facilitate required weekly professional development and in-service meetings for peer mentors
FYE Communication Strategy & Management
Maintain and enhance the communication strategy for the Office of First-Year Experience and its programs
Maintain significant familiarity with social media platforms and strategies necessary to ensure dissemination of FYE content and events to program stakeholders
Coordinate stakeholder submissions for the FYE Newsletter internally and external in avenues such as the Parent Newsletter, The Universe, and other similar venues
Develop and maintain effective material (web content, promotional, and social media) used to promote first-year experience
Monitor the First-Year Experience website and social medial channels regularly and maintain content
Professional Development, Research, and First-Year Community Involvement
Maintain significant familiarity with the professional literature pertaining to first-year issues and interventions, as well as career development and experiential learning
Assist in presenting program achievements and best practices or other relevant research at professional conferences and workshops (e.g., Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience; National Conference on Students in Transition; NACADA Annual Conference)
Office Administration and Program Development
Participate in New Student Orientation activities and programming
Provide support in managing the daily operations of First-Year Mentoring
Participate in weekly staff meetings
Qualifications
Minimum education/experience required:
Master’s Degree and 1 year work experience in an educational setting (any level) OR equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred:
Master’s Degree in student affairs, advising, counseling, education or a related field and 3 years’ experience in higher education, training, or supervision
Preferred Skills, Abilities, Knowledge:
Mature judgment in supporting and mentoring student employees and in making personnel decisions
Knowledge of university policies governing the use and sharing of student information (e.g. FERPA)
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with individuals from various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
Proficiency in written and oral communication, at the level of a university professional
Experience in communications or social media strategy and/or management
Knowledge and experience with human resources and personnel-related issues, including recruitment, training, and evaluation of employees
Academic professionalism and experience sufficient to engage collaboratively with stakeholders such as faculty, administrators, advisement and counseling professionals
Experience in supervision, mentoring, and advisement
Knowledge of current research literature in student development, peer mentoring, teaching and learning, transition issues and the first-year experience

Approximate Starting Salary: $51,000 – $66,000, depending on qualifications
